One Step at a Time: Clinging to God’s Word in the Dark

A few years back, y'all, we were going through a time that was, um, just a season of, of hardship. There was a lot going on. It was a very tough, tough, tough time. It seemed like every area was being, um, hit. And Lenny, Braden and myself were in Birmingham. We were driving back here and Birmingham just happened to.

Have this holiday, the holiday event. It was somewhere in between November, December timeframe and it was at the convention center there and it was a place where you could kind of go and get in the Christmas spirit and they had vendors and it was, um, all kinds of different decorations and themes and just fun, fun Christmas stuff, right.

And I don't know about y'all, but man, when I am having a tough time. I sometimes just need to manufacture some happiness. And so sometimes I do it through shopping therapy. I'm just gonna be honest. And so it's distraction. So I was in a manufacturing mood and I told Braden, who despises, despise the shopping?

I said, be. I need this. We're going in here. I don't wanna hear a word from you. Well, just to tell y'all something that's gonna matter here in a second is Braden is a huge history nut. Loves it, loves artifacts, all the things. So I had, I had threatened him that I did not want any issues 'cause, um, because mama needed some happiness.

So we go in there and the first booth we see y'all. It is not a, it's not a Christmas based, um, booth. In fact, it was a booth with artifacts. Braden's eyes just got so big, and I mean, he darted over there. Turns out that this, this, um. This group that had had rented that booth was from Israel, and they had all kinds of artifacts that they brought with them, some in clay cases, um, with locks.

And obviously we could not, um, they wouldn't open 'em because of the, the antiques and how old they were and the treasure of it. Um, then they had some that were replicas that we were able to look at and learn about and, uh, touch and see. And so all that to be said, um. Um, they began to share with us a little bit about different things, and Braden was looking at this one.

He's like, mom, we've got it. I want the, this is the, this is what I want. I wanna spend, he had been saving up his money and he said, this is what I want us, I wanna spend it on. And so I wanted to show y'all this today and share something with you about it. Um, so here it is.

This is what he, this is what he got. Oops. Can y'all see that? Sorry. Can y'all see that? Okay. So that's it. Okay. And they would put oil in there and it would light up and. What is interesting about that is God's word in Psalm 19, which is my favorite book of the Bible, my chapter, excuse me, my favorite chapter of the Bible.

Um, it says that my, that, that he'll be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. And what they would do with this is they would take it y'all, and they would put it, it would hang, it would hang all the way down by their feet. And then they would hold the end of the court or whatnot and they would walk, but they could only see the next step in front of them.

That was, that was all they could see. 'cause it was pitch black outside. It says, his word says that I'll be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. And I just wanna encourage y'all today because there're gonna be times in our lives when truly, um, we are only seeing the next step. God, are you there?

What's happening? What do we do? I wanna, I wanna know what's gonna happen tomorrow, the next day or the next week or the next year? No, at this moment it's gonna be one step at a time. And then eventually, and eventually it'll be a light to our path. The light, the path, it will, it will brighten back up. But for now.

God is saying, don't question. Have you done something wrong necessarily, or is there, is there? Is there? Is this what's supposed to happen in our faith journey? Well, he's telling us in Psalm one 19. Yeah. Yes. Sometimes you're gonna feel like I'm simply giving you that next step. Cling to the word. He is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
